About our winery:

We are not bound by any traditions, only the desire to make the best wine. Creativity, joy, and desire result in fun, unique wines.

Our story began as many great stories do: over conversation, tasteful libations, and merriment with friends. Bob is a photographer with an eye for beauty. Chuck, an airline pilot, is the enthusiastic catalyst among us. And, Ken, a professional geologist and longtime nature lover, has a passion for fermentation. We shared a dream of making wine—interesting, complex wine—and had a deep curiosity about the artistry of winemaking. With our diverse skill sets, why couldn’t our collective “dream” be actualized? Turns out that with desire, creativity, passion, and joy it could. And, that’s how Hermit Woods was born.

When we’re not hosting a tasting of our wines, meads, and ciders, you’ll find us hard at work in the wine cellar, using innovative new world approaches and experimenting with fruit, wildflowers, and honey to create wines that are traditional in style, balance, and complexity, but like nothing you’ve ever tasted.


Three things to love about us:

Although selling wine is important to our wineries success, it is not why we do what we do at Hermit Woods. The only thing the three founding partners care more about than making and drinking their own wine, is sharing their experience and wine with their guests. We hope that everyone’s visit to Hermit Woods will be both a unique and educational experience. And of course we hope you enjoy our wine.

Hermit Woods is dedicated operating as a sustainable business, supporting their local farmers, wine sellers, and community in every way possible. We have build a winery that will soon be entirely run by solar energy and craft wines using as much as possible locally sources organic fruit and honey.

We are one of the few wineries crafting dry style, often barrel aged fruit wine. Many of our wines are made to lie down for as many as five to fifteen years and are reminiscent of the many wines enjoyed from the wine regions of the world. Our winemaker uses age-old wine making techniques to develop the unique character, complexity and style that our guests have come to love at Hermit Woods.


What makes us unique:

Old world character meets new world fruit—each of our award-winning and handcrafted wines is made from a unique combination of locally sourced fruit, honey, and flowers, in some cases wild-foraged. Our process is devotedly hands-on from vine to bottle, using old world techniques with the highest level of care and integrity. The result is wine with rich, complex flavors. All of our wines are vegan (with the exception of honey wines), gluten-free, raw, and mostly organic to Best Management Practices—and an excellent accompaniment to a variety of foods.

The care and creativity that goes into our wines has resulted in Hermit Woods becoming one of northern New England’s most sought-after artisan brands. If you can’t visit us at the winery, you can find our award-winning wines for sale at select, independently owned liquor stores and restaurants throughout New Hampshire.

HERMIT WOODS "DEEP BLUE" BLUEBERRY PORT by Richard Leahy

A brilliant version of a fruit wine interpretation of ruby port. Nose: bright, clean, fresh and ripe very true to form blueberry fruit, no funk or volatile acidity, with some lifted (but appropriate) alcohol to preserve freshness.

Palate: Impressive fruit/acid balance and incredibly smooth texture. Alcohol well integrated. Very harmonious, pure and smooth, true to the fruit while avoiding the cloying of lesser fruit based wines and no coarse alcohol burn.. Not only an excellent model for a fruit port, but also for grape-based ruby ports.

Additional Hours:

Hours adjust slightly during off season. Closed on Tuesday and Wednesday during winter and spring. Call for hours.

Tasting Policy:

What makes us almost as happy as making and drinking wine? Talking about and sharing our wine with others. We love to share our passion for and knowledge of winemaking with our winery guests, making our tasting room not only fun, but educational for oenophiles both new and experienced. Tour our wine cellar and get a detailed description of how our wine is made, a sample of a young wine out of a barrel or fermenter, and a premium tasting of a selection of our wines with tips on pairing with food. Wine tasting costs $5 or $7 and includes your wine glass. Tours are $20 and include a large tasting glass and premium tasting. We except groups, call ahead to make arraignments.
