About our winery:
Bodegas Irache was founded in 1891. It is located in the small town of Ayegui, at the foot of the historic Montejurra, only two kilometres from the old Roman town of Estella. Its vineyard already supplied wine to the royal houses of Navarre in the 12th century. The history of the winery runs parallel to that of the adjacent monastery, which became the first hospital for pilgrims on the Way to Compostela.
Three things to love about us:
The Bodega´s largest ageing hall, inaugurated in 1991, covers 6,720 m2. Its spectacular array of columns and round arches give it a severe, mysterious, peaceful, ecclesiastical atmosphere. It is this forest of columns that has led numerous visitors to exclaim that "Bodegas Irache is a true cathedral of wine".
What makes us unique:
On one of the walls facing the Pilgrims´ Way to Santiago, Bodegas Irache has a Wine Fountain, so that pilgrims can serve themselves a free glass of wine to spur them on their way. This stretch of the Way to Compostela was already renowned for the quality of the local wine in the 12th century and the Calixtine Codex mentionsEstella, land of Good Bread and Optimal Wine. The Fountain appears in numerous guides to the Pilgrims´ Way and there are hundreds of references to it on the Internet. Thousands of people of different nationalities have visited the Fountain as it is something extraordinary on the Way. If you wish to have the Wine Fountain stamp on your Pilgrim´s Credential you may request it at our offices on weekdays and at the Wine Museum on Saturdays and holidays. There is a web cam pointing at the fountain where you can see pilgrims in real time. The fountain is open from 8.00 am to 20.00 pm.
