Before you freak out about the "less" mention in the title, relax; you know we always have your best glass of wine at heart. This year, rather than grasping onto one of the over-used new year resolutions that you hear around the water cooler at work (the gym is already packed..and one glass of red wine is equivalent to an hour there anyhow so drink up), let's think outside the box. You like wine - that's a given or quite frankly you wouldn't be here. You've got your "go-to" wine just like you've got your go-to shirt, dinner recipe and movie you turn to for laughs.
But this year, my friend, you're turning over a new grape leaf. This year, although you might be sporting that cozy shirt that's starting to lose its luster, we're going to bring out the adventurer in you! Don't worry, you don't have to physically go anywhere - so go ahead and make Everest your new go-to movie and live vicariously from the safety of your own couch - but we will switch things up in your kitchen.
Rather than reaching for that trusty bottle of *insert your favorite wine here* we challenge you to get out of your comfort zone. Do you love Cab? Great, stash it away for a later date. Big fan of Sauv Blanc? Wave buh-bye for now. Instead, drink more of the varietals you're not familiar with. Don't know where to start? Fret not, friend. We've got you covered with our Wine Palate Evolutions cheat sheet comprised of new varietals to try along with a hint as to how they compare to the wines you're a little more familiar with:
If you like Champagne…try Cava
If you like Pinot Noir…try Frappato
If you like Sauvignon Blanc…try Picpoul
If you like Cabernet Sauvignon…try Nebbiolo
If you like Zinfandel try…Mourvedre
If you like Moscato…try Txakolina
If you like Riesling…try Chenin Blanc
If you like Grenache…try Cabernet Franc
So, what do you say? Can we count you in for our "drink more and less" resolution? It sure beats hitting that treadmill. Let's start...NOW! Grab a glass and tell us all about it. Tag @whichwinery in your social post using hashtag #drinkmoreandless for a chance to be featured!
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Jyll Jara, WSET II
For the last nine-plus years, I have been pursuing my passion/obsession for wine. Starting in Southern CA, I learned the basics of regions, varietals, and tasting techniques while serving as Marketing & Sales Manager for Winestyles locations. Following my pursuit for higher wine education, I relocated to the Bay Area in 2010 where I worked in various glamorous capacities including “slinging wine” behind the bar, and “warehouse rat” in Sonoma. I worked and studied my way to Director of Wine Events, coordinating events and tastings with local Napa and Sonoma wineries. I last served as Director of Wine managing a 48 wine by the glass tasting menu, in addition to cultivating an international bottle program. I am proudly WSET Level II Certified, and am currently continuing my pursuit of higher wine education.
