Best Wines to Welcome In Summer

by Kelsey Santisteban

It’s finally that time of year that everyone has been waiting for... summer!  As the weather gets increasingly warmer, it seems like everyone is getting ready to pop open a bottle of rosé by the swimming pool.  To celebrate the first official day of summer (June 20th), I’ve put together a list of some additional wines to complement the season. Nothing beats enjoying a warm summer evening with a glass of wine in your hand!

Rosé

Heitz Cellars 2016 Rosé
Everyone’s favorite summer wine! Refreshing, light, and a color to match the vibes of the season, you can’t really go wrong with a chilled glass of Rosé by the pool or as a gift to a summer barbeque. Try Heitz Cellars 2016 Rose from the Napa Valley. Made from the rare Grignolino grape -- this wine is a lovely bright pink hue with notes ripe red fruit and orange zest.

Whites

Castelvecchio 2015 Sauvignon Blanc
Nothing beats the crisp and refreshing taste of a sauvignon blanc on a hot day. Try the Castelvecchio 2015 Sauvignon Blanc from Northeastern Italy. Medium bodied and aromatic on the nose -- this wine delivers hints of grapefruit, citrus, and melon with some herbaceous notes as well. Great to pair with grilled fish or a creamy pasta.

Paul Cluver Ferricrete Riesling 2015
This wine can often get a bad rap for being “too sweet”, however find a drier, well-balanced Riesling and it makes for an absolutely refreshing summer wine. Try the Paul Cluver Ferricrete Riesling 2015 -- this wine still has a slight amount of sweetness that meshes will with its bright acidity. Hints lemon zest, peach, and some slight minerality make this a vibrant wine enjoy in the heat.

Reds

Broc Cellars “CouCou” Cabernet Franc Nouveau 2016
The parent of the well-known Cabernet Sauvignon produces a lighter, less-tannic wine that is better suited to the hot summer weather. This grape is known to make juicy, fruit-forward wines such as Broc Cellars “CouCou” Cabernet Franc Nouveau 2016 from Santa Barbara County. This is dynamic, light red wine that can served as is or chilled to enjoy with a lighter meal like some ceviche.

Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 2009 (Sangiovese)
An easy to drink red that pairs well with just about anything. This is really a wine that I feel is good any time of the year, but most definitely in the summer as well. I suggest the Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 2009, a relatively inexpensive wine that has great balance with notes of ripe fruit and earthiness. It’s juiciness and smooth tannins make it a fantastic match with a pasta dinner out on the patio.
