1. Freeman Vineyards 2014 Russian River Pinot Noir
This is one of the fullest-bodied Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs that Freeman has ever made. The color is darker than usual, and the nose is atypically tight. Give the wine some air, though, and it reveals hints of black raspberries and oak. The palate brings out the rich red fruit we expect in our Russian River Pinot, and this year there is also a bit more tannin than usual. This and a long finish foretell a slow evolution.

2. Three Sticks Winery 2014 Russian River Pinot Noir
Classic showing Russian River Valley characteristics of black cherries, clove and sandalwood, this wine has a rich entry balanced with beautiful brightness. It is smooth on entry with notes of cola, tobacco leaf and ripe raspberry. Toasted vanilla rounds and frames the palate creating this well-structured Pinot Noir. While approachable now, this wine will sing and dance with age. Photo from The Adobe location in Sonoma

3. Inman Family Wines 2013 Russian River Pinot Noir
Olivet Grange Vineyard (OGV) is the Inman Family’s sensitively farmed estate vineyard. This 10.45 acre vineyard is located at the junction of Olivet and Piner Roads amidst some of Sonoma County’s and the Russian River Valley’s most respected vineyards. Like my other Pinot Noirs, this wine is made without any additions of water, acid, enzymes or tannins and is fermented with the native yeast on the grapes and the naturally available bacteria.

4. Benovia 2014 Russian River Pinot Noir
A truly outstanding Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, the aromas are dominated by bright red fruit tones of Bing cherry and red raspberry, while black fruits dominate on the palette. The bright aromas expand and give way to black plum and toasted baking spices. The wine has bright acidity and firm but fine tannins that should allow for short term cellaring. As always, the wine was bottled without refining or filtration.

5. Lynmar Estate 2014 Russian River Pinot Noir
Fruit is selected from three Russian River Valley vineyards, including our estate properties, Quail Hill Vineyard and Susanna’s Vineyard. A bright, clear garnet in the glass, this vintage opens with beautiful red, ripe fruit aromas: pomegranate and red apple skin intertwine with cardamom and earthy, forest floor notes. On the palate, the red fruit tones lengthen into cherry and cranberry, joined by flavors of cola, baking spice and just a touch of pencil shaving on the structured mid palate. There is a nice weight to the textured, black-tea scented finish.

6. Ramey Wine Cellars 2014 Russian River Pinot Noir
Our first Russian River Valley Pinot Noir strikes a fine balance between rich, unctuous styles and leaner, coastal styles. It is at once both elegant and delicious. As traditionally practiced in Burgundy, Ramey uses an anaerobic approach to preserving the freshness and fruit characteristics of their Pinot Noir. It was aged sur lies with monthly bâtonnage and spent thirteen months in 30% new French barrels and neutral barrels that were previously used for Chardonnay.

7. Ferrari Carano 2014 Russian River Pinot Noir
Delicious aromas of rose petal, pomegranate, raspberry and toasty caramel are followed by elegant flavors of Bing cherry, raspberry jam, toffee and spice. Soft tannins round out the finish. This wine pairs nicely with salmon and is also delicious with light meats such as pork, lamb, poultry and duck confit.

8. Sonoma Cutrer 2014 Russian River Pinot Noir
The first impression starts in the nose with deep, dark fruit aromas of cola and cassis, followed by a touch of cedar wood complexity accented with hints of cola, tobacco, licorice, and baking spices. Classic red fruit flavors of Bing cherry and wild strawberry greet the palate, followed by barrel spice and dark chocolate.
