THANKSGIVING PAIRINGS

by Jyll Jara, WSET II

Thanksgiving is the time to reflect on our many blessings, and generally stuff ourselves with copious amounts of food and drink. The United States of America possesses a rich history of the vine, with the first plantings dating back to the early 1500’s. Multiple ethnic groups have contributed to the story and evolution of American wine, including early plantings represented by (but not limited to) the French, Swiss, British, Spanish, German and Italians. This diverse and rich cultural history has paved the way for our now current status as the fourth largest wine producing country, with all 50 states represented. In the spirit of the first Thanksgiving Feast attended in peace by the Wampanoag Indians and Pilgrims, let us brave the new world and venture into the lesser-known wine varietals. Step away from the Chardonnay and mashed potatoes, and come explore the world of Vouvray paired with Chorizo & Potato Croquettes! Let us give thanks for the rich diversity of our wine and country, and raise a glass to our many blessings. Cheers!
